About Us
Established in 1989.
Before we became TSS, we were Stephen Fry Sheet Metal. Our current owner, Ashley did his apprenticeship with Stephen Fry, before buying out his boss in 2013 and re-naming the business. Now the semi-retired boss, who has worked in the industry in Townsville for almost 50 years, is back working part-time for his one-time apprentice.
The training and ongoing professional development for the next generation of tradespeople is richer due to the depth of experience and wisdom passed on from the older tradies.

What is Stainless Steel?
Stainless steel is a type of alloy (a combination of different metals) that is known for its exceptional corrosion resistance and durability. It is primarily composed of iron, along with varying proportions of chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and other elements. The unique properties of stainless steel make it a popular choice in a wide range of applications across various industries, from construction and manufacturing to household items and medical equipment.
The key features that distinguish stainless steel from other materials include:
Stainless steel comes in various grades and types, each with specific properties suited to different applications. Common types include austenitic, ferritic, martensitic, and duplex stainless steels. The choice of grade depends on factors such as corrosion resistance requirements, mechanical properties needed, and the intended use of the material.
Overall, stainless steel's combination of strength, corrosion resistance, and aesthetic appeal has led to its widespread use in industries ranging from construction and architecture to manufacturing, transportation, and beyond.
The key features that distinguish stainless steel from other materials include:
- Corrosion Resistance: The addition of chromium to stainless steel forms a thin, invisible layer of chromium oxide on the surface. This layer acts as a protective barrier against rust and corrosion, making stainless steel highly resistant to tarnishing, staining, and various environmental factors.
- Strength and Durability: Stainless steel is renowned for its strength and toughness. It can withstand high levels of stress, making it suitable for applications where structural integrity is essential.
- Heat Resistance: Certain types of stainless steel, such as the austenitic grades, can maintain their mechanical properties even at elevated temperatures. This heat resistance makes them suitable for applications involving high temperatures, such as industrial furnaces and exhaust systems.
- Hygiene and Cleanliness: The smooth, non-porous surface of stainless steel makes it easy to clean and maintain. This quality is particularly valuable in industries like food processing, healthcare, and pharmaceuticals where maintaining a sterile environment is crucial.
- Aesthetic Appeal: Stainless steel's sleek and modern appearance, often characterized by its silvery finish, has contributed to its popularity in architectural and interior design projects.
- Recyclability: Stainless steel is fully recyclable, making it an environmentally friendly material choice. It can be melted down and reprocessed to create new stainless steel products, reducing the need for virgin raw materials.

What is a kitchen exhaust canopy?
A kitchen exhaust canopy, often referred to simply as a "hood" or "range hood," is a vital component of commercial kitchens and sometimes residential kitchens. Its primary purpose is to effectively capture, filter, and expel airborne contaminants, heat, steam, grease, and odors generated during cooking processes. The canopy is positioned directly above cooking equipment such as stoves, grills, and fryers, providing a localised and efficient ventilation solution.
Key features and functions of a kitchen exhaust canopy include:
Kitchen exhaust canopies can vary in size, design, and complexity to accommodate the specific needs of different kitchens. They are commonly made from stainless steel due to its durability, heat resistance, and ease of cleaning. Depending on the kitchen layout and cooking equipment, canopies may be wall-mounted, island-mounted, or installed as part of a larger exhaust system.
Regular maintenance of the exhaust canopy, including cleaning and replacing filters, is essential to ensure its efficiency and safety. Neglecting maintenance can lead to reduced ventilation effectiveness, increased energy consumption, and potential fire hazards.
In summary, a kitchen exhaust canopy is a critical component of commercial kitchens, helping to maintain a safe and comfortable environment while efficiently removing airborne contaminants, grease, heat, and odours generated during cooking operations.
Key features and functions of a kitchen exhaust canopy include:
- Ventilation: The canopy is equipped with powerful exhaust fans that create negative pressure, effectively drawing air, steam, and odors from the cooking area. This helps to maintain a comfortable and safe kitchen environment for both kitchen staff and diners.
- Grease Capture: Cooking processes release airborne grease particles, which can accumulate on surfaces and pose fire hazards. The canopy includes filters designed to capture and trap grease, preventing it from entering the ventilation system and reducing the risk of fire.
- Odour Control: By capturing and exhausting cooking odours, the canopy helps maintain a pleasant dining atmosphere and prevents odours from spreading throughout the establishment.
- Cooling: In addition to removing heat and steam, the exhaust canopy helps cool down the cooking area, enhancing the comfort of kitchen staff and preventing overheating of equipment.
- Compliance: Commercial kitchens are often subject to strict regulations and codes regarding ventilation and air quality. Properly designed and installed kitchen exhaust canopies help ensure compliance with these regulations.
- Fire Safety: The grease capture filters and proper ventilation play a crucial role in fire prevention. By removing grease particles from the air, the risk of grease-related fires is significantly reduced.
